Question by Diverging Point: Do digital cameras encourage narcissism?
Would you say that digital cameras encourage narcissism? (Especially cheap point and shoot digital cameras). I’m wondering.
With film cameras, in general, people wouldn’t have wasted a bunch of film taking pictures of themselves…and definitely not in front of a mirror with the flash on. They would have been too embarrassed to show those pictures to their friends. I know when I was a kid, my friends would have laughed at me if I took a bunch of pictures of myself and they would have said “what, no one even wants to take your picture??”
The Internet (as we know it at least) has been around since about the mid-1990’s. I started going online when I was in high school. But digital cameras weren’t available to the public until the late 1990’s. Before digital cameas were available, you definitely did NOT see a million pictures on the internet that people took of themselves.
Some people (especially kids) have even said that they got a camera specifically to post pictures on sites like MySpace. They have no interest at all in photography, and they never would have even gotten a camera if it wasn’t for MySpace.
And what about the whole “emo” sub-culture. Do emo kids naturally gravitate toward taking pictures of themselves with a digital camera?
So what is your opinion. Do you think digital cameras are encouraging narcissism?
Let’s face it…would websites like THIS have been around before there were digital cameras?? (yikes…I weep for the future)

We aren’t talking about a generation ago….we’re talking in a time period of less than 10 years ago. And do you think websites like that would have existed before digital cameras??

My first impulse is to agree. But EVERY generation look the next and said
“You kids… you have it easy…” or
“We would have never….”
So does digital camera encourage Narcissism? Possibly – maybe even yes.
It is a surprise? ??? Hmmmm…..
