Question by Catie T: Texas/A&M/USC Film or Animation?
I’m interested in film/animation and have been accepted to a few schools.
University of Texas: Radio Television Film
Texas A&M: Bachelor of Science in Visualization
USC: Animation and Digital Arts
The cost to attend one of the Texas schools is around 30,000 a year and USC is around 50,000. My parents said to disregard cost, but it’s hard not to in this recession. I think I’d be happy wherever but LA would probably be a whole different and exciting experience. Not that any of the responses would ultimate influence my decision one way or the other, but what do you think of my situation?

Well, you are in luck. You have been accepted to two of the best film and animation schools in the country. USC and U Texas Austin rank very, very high – they are extremely prestigious programs.
Texas A&M, however, is not in the same league. Unless you adore that school, you can strike it from your list.
You could chose either USC or UTA at no loss re: reputation of program. Honestly. USC is just slightly higher ranked than UTA, but not by much, and not by enough to make the extra $ 20,000 per year worth it.
UTA or USC? It comes down to which program you like better, and which school you like better. Which do you feel is a better fit for you?
Keep in mind that if you decide on UTA, you can still experience LA. Do an exchange to USC or UCLA – two very strong film/animation schools – for a term or a year. Or do a summer program at one of those schools. In this way, if you chose UTA, you can still get some of that LA experience in your life. Or study in NYC for a summer at NYU – also a top program – or SVA for animation.
