Final Cut Pro is the professional industry standard for film making. My son is in his last year of college, specializing in film making, and my daughter is a graduate student also specializing in film making.
This is the software that I purchased for them. If you are a student or know someone who is, college bookstores carry or will order the educational version for you. It is still a full version, simply sold at a fraction of the retail price.

As I said before, you can always get the educational version for a substantial discount at a college bookstore or computer center. That is what we bought our kids as students. However, it is a full-blown version at a fraction of the retail cost.
