Marketing Essentials for the New Breed Filmmaker

Indie films and mainstream films have different sets of audiences. Because of this simple fact, both require different marketing strategies. But aside from that, and this is more important: they have different budgets. I guess that’s the primary reason why they differ marketing-wise. Mainstream films with big producers and big budgets have the luxury to “creatively waste” their money in marketing their film. Indie filmmakers have very meager budget so they calculate their every move and plan their marketing strategy wisely.

If you are an indie filmmaker and you want a wider reach without touching your savings, make sure you have these marketing essentials:

A Blog

This one may seem overrated but it works for many.

A domain name only costs $ 12 and hosting costs around $ 4-$ 7 a month. This money is very small compared to the potential return.  Just make sure all of your posts are interesting. Share your opinions, share your experiences, and post a lot of pictures.  Start your blog while you’re still in production so it will slowly get attention.

A Kick-ass Trailer

Of course you know that your film should have a trailer. What I want to emphasize is “Kick-Ass”! Make sure your trailer is really good. Make sure each second of the trailer would push them to watch your movie. No unnecessary parts. Thirty seconds is a good number to keep your audience interested. You have to make them so intrigued they’ll bookmark your site, share your trailer, and watch your movie.

A Meme

If you want to go viral on the internet, try making a meme! Memes are viral pictures, posters, questions on the internet that propagate around, sometimes mutating as they propagate.

What elements in your film can be turned into a meme? Maybe you can come up with a witty question and make an image in photoshop. You and your team can then post this on their social networks. Make sure your memes are witty. If not, it won’t even reach a meme status.

A Cool Poster

Again, this is a very basic requirement. Make different sets of posters if you have money to spare. Make sure your posters weave together into one solid concept.

A Remarkable DVD Packaging

One kid can buy your original DVD but 10 kids will likely burn them. Plus, people watch movies in groups, so your chance of gaining enough profit to fund your next film becomes slimmer.  But, if you make a really kick-ass DVD packaging (and I mean really, really kick-ass), more people might just purchase your DVD. That means, you also have to promote your DVD packaging to blogs, social networks, etc.

A Kickstarter Campaign

Kickstarter isn’t just useful for getting film funding. It’s also useful for marketing your film. Give your DVD to those who pledge $ 20 or higher. You may also use this as a pre-order system. It would seem like they’re donating to your film but in actuality, you’re selling them your products.  They’d love it because they feel like they’re getting their money’s worth (your DVD, merch, etc) plus they feel good for helping.

Indie filmmakers don’t want to spend a lot of money in marketing their films. Maybe it’s because their resources have run dry due to production expenses or maybe they’re scared the money would be put to waste. But you have to spend a little in order to increase your chances of gaining profit.

These film marketing essentials are very effective but they do not cost a fortune.
