Question by Tony: Should I take a film class or a math class?
I’ve ****ed up a lot! I think it’s been 2 or 3 times where I chose a math class over a film class, even though I want to be a filmmaker.
My logic:
To be a filmmaker, BLS.gov recommends going for a bachelor’s degree. In order to get a bachelor’s degree, I need to transfer to a 4-year university. To do that, I need 60 transferrable units, including 3 units of math. Here’s the Math pattern I need to take:
MATH 254: Essential Math (passed)
MATH 154: Elementary Algebra (took it 4 times! highest grade was a D. retaking it this semester as MATH 154A)
MATH 152
MATH xx
It’ll take me at least 5 semesters to get through the math requirement
Now, because of the economy, I have a feeling that film classes may start to disappear (knock on wood), so I want to take what I can, but my math classes get in the way, and I just want to get it over with!
This quarter, I enrolled in 2 film classes (Non-Linear Editing & 16mm Film Production). I dropped the editing class ’cause I would only get 6 hours of sleep ’cause I had Math class the next morning, and I accidently dropped the 16mm with it, so now I’m at 7 units:
MATH 254A: Elementary Algebra
TA 21: Acting for the Camera
I see it like this: in order to be a director, you need to be an actor first, and I haven’t really got enough experience in video to learn film.
So, my question is…
When they release the next schedule for Winter and Spring:
If a film class conflicts with MATH 154B, should I take the film class?
I think I answered my own question, but I guess wanted opinions from others as well.
Plus, I can only handle 6 units per semester anyway.
