Question by Independant Virgo: Can this career path get me to becoming a film producer?
I’m trying to find the best career path to be successful and I need to know how this sounds and what I could do to be even more prepared. I want to be a film producer and an author in the end.
I’m currently in grade twelve and still have another semester to come back for in high school and I’m writing novels. I’m looking into an online/mail program to write books for teenagers or adults just to build my skills and experiences.
After high school, I first plan to go to college for a 2 year executive administration course really close to home so that I don’t need to pay for living on campus.
Once I graduate, I plan on moving a couple hours away to Toronto and take a 3 year film production course, while most likely working part time as an executive assistant or taking an internship as a third assistant director in a film studio. [I’m not too sure if it’ll be possible for me to work while attending college. I will be receiving a Canadian Pension Plan check as long as I remain in school but I’m not sure that’ll be enough to support me. How could I go about affording to live in T.O as well as attending college and on top of that, paying off my first student loan.]
I plan on publishing novels during this time as well for a little extra cash. [I know that is not dependable but I’m sure I have what it takes to publish my writing. So here and there, I could probably do it.]
Otherwise, once college is out of the way, I plan to work my way up the ladder in the film industry till I have the experience, skills and knowledge to be a producer. The thing is, I’m not sure I have the skills for all the aspects of film production so I’m having second thoughts on taking the Film Production course. And, instead, just using the experience I gain working as assistant directors and possibly as celebrity assistants to get myself up there.
I’d love any input people can offer me. So, how does all this sound to you? What can I do? Or what would be a better idea for me? I am also from a rather poor family, and no one in my family has actually gone to college before so I need all the help I can get. I can’t exactly afford college and I think I should attend only as many years as I need to, to lessen the amount I’ll have to pay. But, I want as much education as I can get to go where I want to, so it’s difficult to decide. Anyways, what ya think?

Hi,
You sound very driven and motivated, which is great! But, please remember, you are still so young! I don’t want to discourage you from pursuing your dreams….I think it is fantastic to do so, but you need to cut yourself some slack! It sounds like you have figured out your entire life already, and in looking to the future all the time you are going to hinder your enjoyment of the present, i.e. youth! Now is not the time for stressing about a job that you may or may not decide you want after college. Think about college, for sure, but beyond that, let it flow! I had my life all planned out when I was younger too, and guess what? I changed, and life changed me. Just relax, chill, and take a break from all the planning. And, if you want to publish novels you should look into creative writing courses more so than anything else. It is nigh on impossible to get published these days, and you are so young! You need to get more life experience (in my opinion) and writing practice before you think about publishing. I think you are like me, a terrible perfectionist! One achievement (getting into college) right now would be enough to celebrate, let alone publishing!! CHILL!!
