Question by Connie C: Can you edit mpeg-2 files in Final Cut Express/Pro?
For class, I usually record my films with a camera that requires a tape. Then I get into class and I upload it onto the computers and save them as .mov files (to open them in Quicktime).
However, this time I tried using my mother’s Sony HDD videocamera (does not require a tape) and realized when I imported them onto my computer, they could only save as mpeg-2 (file name ends as .mpg, but in properties they specify as mpeg-2). They do not open in Quicktime.
I’m pretty sure we use the latest version of Final Cut for all of our film editing. If I burn my files on a disc or bring them in on a flash drive, would Final Cut be able to open them for editing?

Not sure about FC, but I have a Sony HDD camera, and iLife 08 with iMovie 08 will now download and let you capture/edit the movie files on the HDD cam. iLife 06 would not. Make sure your using iLife 08 and you should have no problems getting it into iMovie. Once in iMovie, you can probably transfer it to FC.
