Question by j: Copyrighted Music Laws and Movies/Videos?
My digital film teacher told me this and I was wondering if it is true. You can use up to 30 seconds, no more, of any song in a movie or video and still not violate the copyright laws, meaning it is perfectly legal to use 30 seconds or less. He went to film school and he knows his stuff, but I just wanted to make sure. Also, does this apply to movies that would make a profit? For example a snowboard mix with ac dc in the background? Thanks.

Yes, it is true. 30 seconds of a song and that is it.
The reason why a movie can use more than thirty seconds of a song is because they get permission from the recording studio and artists.
