Question by Ashley: Could you provide an example of how you would discuss the content of the works of a particular filmmaker?
Answer by Gary
It would have to depend on the film-maker. You have autorist directors like Hitch and Woody for example. Directors who have a clear style and thematic obsessions. Or you can look at a director’s work as exemplary of his favorite genre. (I wrote a paper on how Hawks attempted a large number of genres, how he excelled at some, not so much with others. How a “realistic and overlapping” dialogue, and the presentation of women as “one of the guys” stood out as recurring elements.
