I’ve recently received several strange email replies to a few work proposals I’ve been sending out in advance of the Toronto International Film Festival (tiff.net). It got me thinking once again about the nature of the PMD’s role…filmmakers — both studio and indies alike — have little idea about the nature of our job. We aren’t glorified PR hacks, even if our work delves into public relations to some degree. We’re not just media people, even if our jobs cross over into the media sphere… The road is long. The education campaign is going to be a steep climb. Yet by our very presence and a focus on not only the technical/financial side of our jobs, but also on the “sizzle” side of things, PMD’s can brand themselves uniquely on the indie filmmaking scene.
