Paramount’s R-rated horror pic The Devil Inside is scaring up monumental job at the interior box state, where it’s now on series to susceptible as lofty as $ 30 1000000. Devil Inside and is hunt at a big $ 15 million Friday, including $ 2M midnights from 1,400 theaters. Now the excogitate is how some that ‘F’ word-of-mouth for this genre picture playacting really childlike and really social to see if it module be too frontloaded. But it’s extraordinary for a flat to acquire its outgo from honourable the midnight shows. This ‘found-footage’ supernaturalism surged in 2,285 runs for the unremarkably slow post-holiday weekend. It was a high begin for 2012 with belike $ 125M coverall film plain $ 10.6M). The win pushed kill into 2nd judge Paramount’s Christmas and New Year’s somebody M:I4 co-funded by David Ellison’s Skydance Prods. Devil Inside is the only new panoramic outlet of the weekend. Devil Inside is predicted to revenue roughly $ 5.8 cardinal on Fri for a $ 19 M weekend, putting its domestic total at nearly $ 170 million.

The Devil Inside is an American supernatural horror film directed and co-written by William Brent Bell, as a documentary-style film about a woman who becomes involved in a series of exorcisms during her quest to determine what happened to her mother, a woman who murdered three people as a result of being possessed by a demon. Produced by Morris Paulson and Matthew Peterman,[4] the film stars Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, and Suzan Crowley, and was released theatrically on January 6, 2012.[5][6]
On October 30, 1989, Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley) committed triple murders during an exorcism performed on her. The Catholic Church became involved, and she has since been in a Catholic psychiatric hospital in Rome.

In 2009, twenty years later, her daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) and a film crew try to find a pastor/scientist to help Maria. Isabella starts to question whether this runs in families, as she fears she herself will one day be possessed. Maria’s possession proves to be unlike anything in the history of Christianity. A series of unauthorized exorcisms ensues. Everything goes horribly wrong, and the only piece of evidence is the footage caught by the film crew.

The film was not screened for critics, and has received overwhelmingly negative reviews. Based on 36 reviews by Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds an approval rating of 7% with the consensus stating “The Devil Inside is a cheap, choppy unscary mess, featuring one of the worst endings in recent memory.” [8] Peter Howell of the Toronto Star felt that the film is already a candidate for the worst film of 2012. [9]Stephen Witty of The Star-Ledger opined that “after The Blair Witch Project got by with sticks and stones and offscreen noises, filmmakers started thinking they didn’t have to show anything. Well, no. It’s better when you don’t show too much – but if your story is about the supernatural, eventually you’re going to have to come up with something. The Devil Inside can’t.”[10] Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribunefelt that the film “joins a long, woozy-camera parade of found-footage scare pictures, among them The Blair Witch Project, the Paranormal Activity films and certain wedding videos that won’t go away.”[11] Michael Rechtshaffen of the Hollywood Reporter stated that the film “proves as scary and unsettling as a slab of devil’s food cake – only considerably less satisfying.[12]

Outside of all the negative reviews, some critics were able to give the film a “thumbs up”. Steve “Uncle Creepy” Barton of Dread Central had a positive review of the film stating, “The Devil Inside is home to moments that will shock, scare, disturb, and leave you gasping. It’s a trip to the dark side that’s well worth taking.”[13] Joey Leydon of Variety felt that the film “generates a fair amount of suspense during sizable swaths of its familiar but serviceable exorcism-centric scenario.”[14]

Question by Manchelli: Low-budget filmmaking sound advice?
I am making a short film to send into a (I haven’t decided which one(s) yet) film festival and I am mostly likely going to use the Panasonic AG-DVX100B or HVX200 and was wondering, do I need sound equipment? Like, boom mics, etc.? Or will the camera itself suffice for professional material? Thanks!

Answer by Lucas
Hi, like most things, the more you spend on equipment the better quality production you will get, most camera microphones are omni-directional, meaning that they will pick up sound frome everywhere, if the camera has a plug for a mic you could get a uni-directional mic, shich will only (mostly) pick up sound from where you are pointing it, you could get a uni-directional condenser mic for fairly cheap off ebay or similar and pick up a foam cover from a music shop to cut out any wind on set, also cosider using a tripod for panning shots, or buying a cheap attachment for the bottom of your camera to fit a foot long pipe or similar thing to with about half a kilo weight on the bottom, just rig something up, this will keep your camera steady when you’re filming freehand, running a wire between two poles and setting up a “flying fox” for your camera is a good one too for running shots.

You can just make your own boom from a broomstick and a cheap mic holder, just run a long lead down the stick, there’s no need to pay money for a boom, I’d seriously consider buying a cheap uni-directional condenser mic, the built in one will also pick up sound from the camera itself, like clicking buttons, adjusting grip etc.

You can also record the sound seperately if you have some way of editing it later, it depends on how your camera stores the video ( a flash drive will let you get files straight off and edit with a program)

Good luck 🙂
