Question by herakh: Do they need permission to use as background music?
i was watching this local documentary show and it used a very familiar background music. The music was from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within soundtrack. so my question is, do we need to ask permission from whoever owns the music in order to use it for a production?

herakh, yes, you do need permission to use music in any other production, and in most cases, you’ll have to pay for the rights to use it.
If you use it without permission, and the copyright owner finds out, you can be sued and lose, big-time. The courts take copyright infringement seriously, especially when the person uses the music (or other material) for a purpose which was intended to make a profit.
On the bright side, there are many talented undiscovered artists who’d probably leap at the chance to have their music heard, for free, just for the exposure and a credit.
