Question by Colleen R: Documentary making without any college degree to match it?
I’m wondering if anyone out there has made good documentaries without having the classes on how to do it. I want to travel and make documentaries and looking at colleges, but curious if I could easily bing out on how-to books…I do feel I’m dedicated. PLz, what is it like and should I waste a year of “Cinema History” before I actually get to the good classes in filmmaking programs?
I know the last one was not

1) Check out Directing the Documentary, by Michael Rabiger.
2) Watch a lot of documentaries and fiction films — those cinema history classes are not a waste at all – actually very useful.
3) Get a camera – any camera – and start shooting. Practice, practice, practice.
