Question by jatelf72: I need some career advice.?
I have a situation that I hope someone can help me with. I don’t mean to sound negative or whine. If I do sound like I’m whining then I’ll apologies from the beginning for that. I also know that my situation isn’t that uncommon for a lot people in the field I have my degree. For most people in this current economic crisis I should be thankful that I have any stable steady job. I’m just tired of being stuck in a dead end job that I don’t like and I don’t find satisfying on any level.
My situation is this. In the mid nineties I went to a of career adviser I took all of the tests I need to. They analyzed their test and threw their chicken bones and told me that I’m best suited for a career in communications. Specifically television and film behind the scene area would suit me the best. I went to the library and the bookstores and read every book I could find about T.V. and Film careers. I decided that this is the career I wanted. I went to all of the television, film and production houses in Indianapolis general area to get any advice and help getting into the field. They all told me to go get a degree and come back and they would help me get my foot in the door. So I got my communication degree from IUPUI in 2002. The problem was when I was doing my degree I had to work also to pay my bills. Which meant that I couldn’t do any internship. So when I went back to companies they saw that I had a degree but no experience. Since the economy was so bad then no one really wanted to take the time or resources to give me the practical experience that I needed. So I decided to do the independent film route to get my experience. I contacted some friends from college and work to see if they wanted to help me. Everybody was all gung ho at the beginning; and wanted to help. But every time we got close to the date to actually film something my buddies would disappear or give me every excuse in the book for not showing up. So eight years after getting my degree I’m 38 years old and I still have no practical experience and stuck in a dead end job that I hate. I applied for other jobs in the company and with other companies. I haven’t heard anything about the other jobs.
By writing this I’m hoping someone will be willing to throw me a bone by giving me some good advice. I’m stuck and I can’t seem to get out.

There are probably parallel, related fields you could look into. Take a look at entertainment in general. I work in live theatre myself…most of our people have degrees. Not all of which theatre specific degrees. I can count two whom have degrees in film.
