
Part 1/5 of “Independent’s Day”, a 45-minute documentary that looks at the past, present, and future of the independent video rental store through several interviews with independent video store owners in Chicago, IL. It was filmed between January and April 2006 and put together for an independent study during the filmmakers’ senior year of high school. It was directed, filmed, and edited by Emilio Tostado and Bill Bremer, with an original score composed and performed by Emilio Tostado. This documentary features interview footage from the owners and/or employees of Village Video, Northcoast Video, Lion Video, Odd Obsession, Facets Multimedia, Al-Mansoor Video, Video Playground, Nationwide Video, Earwax Video and Cafe, and Specialty Video. It also features a telephone interview with Steve Swasey, who is remains the Director of Corporate Communications of Netflix, as well as an intimate interview with Jim Burrows, owner of the 3 Penny Cinema, which closed its doors during the summer of 2006.
