Leeds Metropolitan University students are celebrating retaining the city’s sporting bragging rights as the sixth annual Leeds Varsity took place yesterday. The sporting pride of the city’s two universities was put on the line with a day of intense competition as the institutions went head-to-head in 53 competitive fixtures across 35 different sports. A crowd of over 10000 packed into Headingley Carnegie Stadium for the evening rugby union finale which saw Leeds Met triumph 27-15 in a thrilling contest in front of Leeds Carnegie coaches Neil Back and Andy Key. The event is the biggest single day multi-sport Varsity in the country and this year was hosted by the University of Leeds. Leeds Met have now won the trophy for six consecutive years but faced a stern test in a range of sports from their city neighbours. Highlights of the day included a dramatic penalty shootout in the men’s football which Leeds Met held their nerve to win, a 2-2 draw in the women’s hockey and a comfortable 72-0 victory for Leeds Met in the rugby …
