Oedipus The King — Part 5/12

Part of “Oedipus the King” from 1984 TV production with Michael Pennington, Claire Bloom and John Shrapnel. Translated and directed by the late Don Taylor. here’s a playlist with all these Oedipus videos in order: www.youtube.com from John O’Connor’s review in New York Times (1988): Mr. Marks [producer] has explained: ”What we wanted was to find a way for authentic Sophocles to speak directly to viewers in such a way that the two and a half millennia dividing us would melt away. They should be able to see into his mind as he uncannily still seems to see into ours.” Rather than attempting authentic recreations with masks and so forth, this series aims for an ”indeterminate feel” in setting and costuming. David Myercough-Jones has designed a spare, misty arena outside the gates to the king’s palace. June Hudson’s costumes are plucked from different historical periods, elegant empire gowns for Jocasta, barrister robes for the chorus, a white silk suit for Oedipus. The concept works. ”Oedipus the King,” unfolding like some eternal mystery, is powerful. Its characters are archetypes embedded in our psyches, filling us with wonder even as we shudder. And the cast is about as good as you’ll get nowadays. ….. Television, it seems, is offering the best theater in town at the moment. Directed by Don Taylor Writing credits: Sophocles play Don Taylor translation Cast: Michael Pennington … Oedipus Rex Claire Bloom … Jocasta John Shrapnel … Creon Michael Byrne … Chorus …

EDIT: Before making this video, the site Media-Convert did not have much traffic. But with this video, the site is now under high traffic, and might NOT work as well as it used to. The owner should be doing some upgrades soon. This is a tutorial on how to import .MOVs in Windows Movie Maker. I’ve noticed that many people can’t find freeware that allows you to convert from MOV to whatever Windows Movie Maker would support. So, I did a bit of searching and found a simple way to do so without installing or downloading anything, and its free. Please comment or subscribe and I just might make more tutorials… 😉 ————————— TROUBLESHOOTING: ERROR: “Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'” – This is a database error, which is the site’s fault. Nothing you can do about it other than wait it out. ERROR: “File size exceeds limit” – The service only allows video files under 150MB. If you have a video which is bigger than this, search Google for SUPER and download their program, which is free, but a bit more complicated. Use SUPER instead (see the link below) ERROR: “Windows Media Player does not recognize the .MSWMM extension” – When you finish editing your video in Movie Maker, you are supposed to PUBLISH your movie, not SAVE. Save As will save the project file in order for you to continue editing later; it does NOT turn it into a movie. ERROR: “Server is overloaded, please refresh home page” – Use this link instead: media …
