Personal Blogging, Documentary, and History

Article by M. Moume

A blog which is a blend of the terms web log are usually managed by a person. There are many types of entries for a blog: commentary; events descriptions; documentary; history; or even videos. A blog is basically a type of website or maybe a part of a website.

Documentary is usually the default class when it comes to personal blogging. While there are many blogs that serve many functions, most are the author’s roll of life affairs and experiences. There are certain blogs that focuses on poetry and creative writing, but most of the personal blogs are documentary type.

For a long time, only filmmakers; writers; and photographers had the objective of reporting everything that they encounter in a documentary. However, nowadays, things have changed a lot. Now, people are moving towards times where people are moving towards embracing the subjectivity built in the documentary form. This conveys that documentaries nowadays most of the time reflect the different voices and the intuition of the inventor. It also shows that today’s documentaries usually goes around personalities.

This means, there’s a thin line between documentary and memoir in today’s blogs. Blogs usually lies somewhere between documentaries and memoirs: this fogs the differences much further. Whether or not we may find this good, for the better or for the worse; personal blogging, documentary and memoir are now beyond any doubt twisted around.

Documentaries may sound too formal. This explains why some bloggers think of making documentaries in any sense. However, when someone sits down in front of their computer, or a laptop and jotting the events of their day, it becomes a documentary of their historical moments. These are things we all take for granted, for instance, making a cup of coffee, taking the public transport back home, or helping a blind guy cross the road. Nevertheless, for people who live in a situation different from ours may be very captivated by our way of life.

This is the kind of captivation that is the main thing in documentary projects today. A lay person does not think that they’re actually writing a documentary when they sit down to blog. However, in the future to come, people will see today’s blog as a documentary of our era: of how people are today; of how people react to things today or of how people handle things today. This shows that we are in a way creating history for the people of tomorrow to see.

Documentary may not be the main aim for people who spend a lot of time posting up their thoughts and activities on the internet when it comes to blogging. The documentary type of blogging is more like a side kick that the main aim of personal blogging. It can be proven that personal blogs are more than just the thoughts of a person as there are millions of people publishing their personal diaries online. People nowadays are so keen in blogging shows that personal blogging in one way or another is a form of documentary meant for public consumption. The many people who reads blogs of others just shows that there are people who are curious about others’ lifestyle which is what keeps the blogs going.

Question by Griffin S: Reflexivity in documentaries?
According to my documentary filmmaking professor Trihn Min-ha sees 2 types of reflexivity in filmmaking. I was asked to explain this. Here is what I wrote:

According to Trihn Mihn-ha, there are two modes of reflexivity. The first, at least in prevalence in anthropological film, is reflexivity as a summation and presentation of narrative, methodology and context, which seeks to elevate (or be accepted as elevated) anthropological filmmaking to scientific objectivity. This serves to elevate the capture of footage, and thus the filmmaker, to a scientific and empirical tool, ergo imbuing in the film the significance (and implied nobility) of the a posteriori collection of experience, for the sake of capture and presentation of knowledge. This provides an illusion of something a priori of value of “them,” which is regarded as irrelevant until it is captured for “us.”
The second mode of reflexivity, which is practiced and preferred by Trihn Mihn-ha, is reflexivity on the relationship of subject to frame, of the presentation of reality to filmmaker by subject, and the presentation of reality to audience by filmmaker. Such reflexivity acknowledges the limitations of film as a presentation of an ephemeral “reality,” and thus strips the film of the artifice of an imposed, and artificially objective, meaning. The idea is to acknowledge the cropping inherent in capturing an image, to create an interval between presentation and understanding, in which lies a void, a nothingness (or more specifically a willingness to become nothingness), to free the work from the imposition of meaning or significance, to facilitate critical thought, from which understood meaning is inherent, undeniable, inescapable, and perhaps ultimately subjective. This mode of reflexivity is more ethical in that it presents the subject, in this case the women of Senegal, as they presented themselves. This relationship between image and subject is deliberately presented as limited by the filmmaker to force acknowledgement of her relationship to this presentation and acknowledge the inherent failure of film to be fully immersive; thus forcing the recognition of the futility and paternalism of attempted objectivity and empiricism, freeing the viewer to come critically to the meaning innate in the presented anthropological images.

Does this make any sense? Is it correct?

sounds like a bunch of eastern mumble jumbo t me I worked on TV an FIlm from 1980 to present in one form or another and never hear any such thing. we look at the subject and think how are we going to best Communicate this subject to the great unwashed masses? Someone who knows nothing about what we are talking about and leave them in 60-Min’s knowing what we do for a living. That leads to several main points and then connectors to link them, that goes to storyboard, and gets fleshed out for a filming script. This will have all dialog and all shots listed on it. You need to think as one who has never heard of what you are documenting, that is the secret to film-making, nothing more the best have learned this. I learned it fro Roi Peters, and Steven Spielberg during a certain film I interned on a few years back.
