Question by Shaquueshia: I’m starting to hate White people?
I’m 35 years old and for the majority of my life, I’ve had positive interactions with Whites, but in recent years a string of incidents has made me hate white people in general. A while back, I moved from Ohio to NYC to pursue a career as a filmmaker. Almost immediately, I began for the first time in my life, to notice the way in which many Whites treated and regarded Blacks and Latinos.
It was not uncommon for a White friend to express fear of a minority for no apparent reason. Most Whites seemed reluctant to socialize with African Americans and in the culturally diverse cornucopia known as NYC, many Whites refused to live in neighborhoods with non-white inhabitants. Most refused to sit next to a Black or Latino on the subway and were quick to label people of color as “ghetto”, “uneducated” and “dangerous”. I was constantly complimented on my “diction” and “vocabulary” despite possessing a post-graduate degree. In the job market, I was always called in for job interviews, to be met with surprised looks when I arrived to the job interview. I began to feel that most Whites when I spoke to them exhibited a condescending attitude towards me speaking to me like I was a 6 year old child.
Eventually I returned to Ohio, and began again to sense racial prejudice from the majority of Whites I encountered. Ranging from racist jokes to ridiculous stereotypes about African Americans, I began to wonder if all White people were racist and why? Most of my relationships with my White friends have deteriorated as I no longer condone many of their racist comments and don’t want to be around them.
I am at the point where I’m sick and tired of dealing with White people and their bigoted words and actions. But I also realize that all White people are not racist.
I want to have a career in Arts Administration or higher Education, but don’t know if this is possible in a world dominated by Whites.
I am now embarking on a career in art administration. I recently applied for a job, but deep down feel like I will not get it because of the color of my skin.
