Question by foryourconsideration: To everyone that wants to study film, is school holding you back?
I have to ask, is your school holding you back from studying what you want to study?
I go to UMBC. Having just transferred from a community college after a year of courses and submitting a portfolio of visual artwork to the school to gain acceptance into the visual arts program, I thought that after transferring that I would at least get to take at least one class in film making or its history.
But no, I have to take GEP prerequisites and then take prerequisites for the visual arts program just so I can take a class into film making when I was told that I would be well on my way to the first step to the career I want after taking the courses at community college. And to top it all off, the staff in the visual arts department doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing by telling me that I can take a class that scheduled during another one of my classes “just as long as I’m ready to learn.” Even when all the numbers I were given so I could add the class were rejected and I’ve already done 2 projects for the class. It seems that the system is excluding me from taking the course (the prerequisite) so then I would have to take it next semester and wait a whole year to take yet another prerequisite to get closer to a class involving film.
I’m really pissed off about this. I know that colleges want you to be “well rounded” but I want to at least get a handle on what I’m planning on doing for the rest of my life, at least in a year of attending the school so I can know whether or not it’s the right choice.
So, should I just go to a school strictly for film, wait it out, or try and shoot something of my own and hope to get lucky and cement a spot in the industry?

If you want to be doing film you should be doing it in your own time anyway, talk to the department of film and see if you can borrow books or equipment etc so that when you are ready to take that class how ever long they may take, you’ll have an idea about whether you like it and/or already be ahead in the course
