I have never known what a film producer really does? Anyone know the answer, please tell me.

They finance the movie. They purchase the script, they approve of the script and suggest changes. They approve production, the production schedule.
They control the director. They have the power to hire and fire. They suggest the actors and the length of the movie.
They decide if the movie is made or not.
