You can enter a film school in the US, no problem. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get a work visa afterwards. It’s possible, but it is unlikely.
Most people in the industry start as production assistants, but there are lots of other possible career paths. Your issue is that there are usually more applicants than there are jobs in these fields, so it’s not as if the US doesn’t have qualified applicants. That’d prevent you from getting the visa *unless* you were highly, highly talented, and well connected.
Thus I recommend that, if you are to go to film school in the US, you go only to one of the top film schools in the country. You need to come out of there with a superior portfolio of work, and with very, very good connections in the industry. This will make it more likely that you’ll be able to stay and work after graduation. So look at these programs:
– New York University
– UCLA
– USC
– Vancouver Film (that’s actually in Canada)
– American Film Institute
– Columbia U
– California Institute of the Arts
– North Carolina School of the Arts
– U Texas Austin
Because of your country’s past relationship with the UK, I wonder if studying and later working *there* wouldn’t be easier? If it is, then for film schools in the UK, there are two that I’d rank as highly as those above:
– National Film and Television School
– London Film School
With NFTS being the better of the two.
Other UK programs that I’ve heard good things about are:
– The Royal College of Art (London)
– Bournemouth University
– Napier University
– London College of Communication
